海外赴任して早くもこんな日が訪れました。
そこそこ可愛がっていた部下が突然「会社を辞める」と言い出したのです。
生まれて初めて英語で説得を試みましたのでその時の様子を残しておきたいと思います。
その日は突然訪れた
とある金曜日でした。
ごくごく当たり前の金曜日だったのですが・・・と言いたいところですが、実はそうではなく。
その日はジャカルタで大規模デモが午後から予定されていたのです。

日本でも著名人の発言をきっかけにネット上で炎上することが散見されますが、インドネシアでも同様のことは起こるようで。
さらにその発言に宗教感が絡んでくると、もはやネット上での炎上では収まらずデモへと発展してしまうんですね。
このデモと部下が辞めたこと自体は基本的に関連性はないのですが、いずれにせよそんな日に私は彼ととある日系企業に打ち合わせに行く予定が組まれていたんです。
打ち合わせ開始は15:30でしたが、事前に彼から「MTGに向けて、Koさんと事前打ち合わせをしたい」と相談されていたため、14:45頃に現地に到着するよう向かいました。
完全にMTG用の事前打ち合わせだと信じていました。
もしくは、彼の上司(= Local Representativeのトップ)への不平不満くらいかなと。
某社Smoking Spaceでの会話
彼の名前をA君としましょう。
スペックとしては、弊社が2社目から3社目の27歳(くらいだったはず)で、付き合っている彼女と来年結婚をする予定。
お給料は低くて5万円/月くらいですが、特に不満があるということも聞いていませんでした。
私が記憶している限りですが、A君との会話は以下のような感じでした。
(Ko) Ha〜, after long time. (移動に2時間くらいかかったので)
(A君) Ko-san, thank you for coming earlier.
(Ko) Ya. so today, we would share with them about xxx, right?
(A君) Yes, in order for them to launch the products, the current process status must be checked and confirmed each other.
(Ko) Right, then, I wanted to check with you about the meeting with xxx next Thursday.
(A君) OK.
(Ko) … Do I need to join it? It is no problem that you would participate in it.
(A君) Well, Ko-san is required, definitely.
(Ko) I see, then OK. Where should we meet together? At the lobby of the customer?
(A君) Well, I cannot join it.
(Ko) Huh? Why?
(A君) Because I will resign our company…
(Ko) (耳に入っていない) You have another schedule? No no no… I need your support.
(A君) Because I will resign our company…
(Ko) …? Huh?
(A君) I decided I will resign our company.
(Ko) Are you sure? Isn’ it…? Ah… what?? Why? When?
(A君) Sorry Ko-san, this is very difficult decision for me, but I already decided.
(Ko) Wait, wait, wait. Let me set again. As I told you before, your evaluation in our management is very high and I am sure your salary will increase next year. Of course, my evaluation is so high.
(A君) Yeah, I know Ko-san evaluates myself.
(Ko) Then, why…?
(A君) Well, main reason is my salary. Next year, I will get married, but I cannot live with her in the current salary level.
(Ko) …I understood, but you said you already decided, which means it has already determined that you would go to next company?
(A君) Yes, from next Wednesday. Therefore, I cannot visit xxx next Thursday with you, so sorry…
(Ko) …………… Oh my gosh.
(A君) I am very sorry, Ko-san.
(Ko) Well, if already fixed it might be difficult, but is it not possible if our company double your salary or consider some benefits?
(A君 ) It has already determined and I signed up actually.
(Ko) Well, I am so sorry and sorry because your evaluation is so high and we expect you to work together in future.
(A君 ) Yes, I know so sorry…
(Ko) But, you know, I job-hopped twice so I am not qualified to persuade you to stay.
(A君 ) Hahaha, yeah we are same.
(Ko) Now I totally understood that my ex-boss told me that it would damage to our company if you are gone.
(A君) Oh yeah? Hahaha…
(Ko) Anyway, let’s go to the meeting, do you make the announcement to them?
(A君) How do you think, Ko-san? Is it better?
(Ko) Well, I think you should notify our President Director first, and notification to the customers will be after that.
(A君) OK, thank you for your consideration.
(Ko) But, you can still change your mind, huh?
(A君) hahaha…
といった感じでしたかね。
「説得を」と思ったものの、2回転職しているヤツができるわけなかった
冷静に考えてみれば、私が「会社を辞めたい」と言っている人に対して説得なんかできる立場ではないことに気が付きました。
一サラリーマンとしては、ポジションも考慮し「まずは説得を」となるのでしょうが、その場に誰もいなかったこともあり、彼の意思を尊重しました。
恐らく、給与以外のこともあると思います。
私への不平不満、彼の直属上司への不平不満、PDへの不平不満、同僚への不平不満・・・。
転職に人間関係の悩みはつきものですから。
ただ一方で、彼はルールを完全に逸脱してしまっています。
インドネシアの会社では、「退職30日以上前に通知をしなくてはならない」というルールがあり、当社もそれに準拠しています。
今回のA君は、12月2日に通達したと言いつつも、個人的に私に話しただけですから、この時点でカウントされていません。
いや、仮にカウントされようとも期間が足りないのです。
12月5日に会社へ通達し、12月6日に退社するわけですから、もはや「前日通知」です。
イレギュラー中のイレギュラーでしたが、「退職金なし」という形で彼はうちの会社から去って行きました。
「社員は家族だ」とはPDがよく言っていたものですが、去って行くときはこんな感じ。
結果、誰も彼を歓迎して見送るということはなく、何とも後味悪い退職となってしまいました。
